Myth Buster: Water Features = Mosquitoes

It is a very common misconception that having a water feature will result in more mosquitoes. This is great news since as you may have noticed, Edmonton is currently the mosquito capital of Canada! The reason for this is all of the standing water we have this year due to massive amounts of snow melt. The key here is standing water. Mosquitoes tend to inhabit and lay eggs in wet areas but if there is water movement they can't survive in the water. In water features such as ponds, waterfalls and gurgling boulders there is always moving water so you don't have to worry about any extra mosquitoes.

MYTH BUSTED!

Beautiful Ponds and Waterfalls Eager for Spring!

If your anything like me, you can hardly wait for spring for many reasons; warmer weather, green grass, clean roads... But if I had to decide the thing I most look forward to the most it is sitting in my back yard oasis.  Whether it's relaxing after a long day or entertaining friends, it is my favorite place to be during the non winter seasons.

Usually April marks the beginning of the pond season and is the right time to have us come and get your pond up and running for you so that you can enjoy it fully over the coming months.  The best way to start your pond off right is with a spray down and cleanup followed by proper doses of beneficial bacteria to help balance your pond's ecosystem quicker and with less maintenance later.   Adjusting a few rocks and checking lights before filling your pond with water will ensure it looks its best day and night.  Once we are out of the frost scare I recommend committing some time to purchase a few more plants, including some mosses or flox to continue to improve the naturalness of your water feature. Any kind of creeping plant will also help to soften the look of the rocks. Experiment and have fun during this next great pond season! You deserve it after this intense Alberta winter!

We at Patio Magic would love for you to send us your water feature pictures as your pond continues to change and mature.

Feel free to check out our great maintenance packages for spring start up, summer check up, and fall shutdown for ponds, waterfalls, and bubbling rocks.  Of course if you love the hobby as much as I do perhaps you will put in the personal time to keep it running all year round.  Here are few pictures of my pond this winter.

Hey, one last thing.  If you don’t have a pond or water feature yet, think about it and join all the rest of us who have a private escape that we get to enjoy all summer long.  It will be one of the best investments you will ever make!  It sure was for me!

New Compact Equipment Saves Established Yards and Backs

If you hired Patio Magic’s services over the last year or two you may have noticed some new compact equipment we are using to help reduce the impact on our customers yards.  These small transport machines from the German manufacturer PowerPac are a lifesaver for the Patio Magic crew as well as for homeowners yards (especially grass).  These machines allow access through tight yard gates and over difficult terrain which enables us to reduce construction times and stress on high trafficked areas including grass, driveways and sidewalks which can often suffer from the impact of larger equipment.  With widths as narrow as 22” and weight capacities from 600-1800lbs, these compact machines can do a lot of work.

Expect to see them available for rental soon from various rental companies.

Going greener sometimes requires going a bit leaner.

Check out these machines at PMI Equipment, a division of Patio Magic Inc.  You can also check out their new video (below) and YouTube page!
